We have not handled or tested any listing. This is a pre-purchase checklist based on manufacturer information and general marketplace precautions.
1. Confirm which calculator it is
Look for the model name in clear photos of the front and back. A TI-84 Plus and a TI-84 Plus CE are different devices, so compare the listing to the exact model your class or exam permits. Verify exam rules with your school or testing organization.
If a listing says only “TI-84,” ask the seller for a photo of the model label before paying.
2. Ask for proof it works
- A photo of the calculator powered on, with readable text across the screen.
- Confirmation that the keys are not stuck and a short calculation works.
- Clear photos of the battery compartment, with no visible corrosion or leakage.
- Photos of the screen at an angle so scratches or dark patches are easier to see.
TI’s guide says the standard TI-84 Plus uses four AAA batteries and a backup button cell. TI also notes that a blank-looking display can sometimes be a contrast setting issue, so a single dark photo is not enough to judge function. TI guidebook ↗ TI troubleshooting ↗
3. Read the entire listing
Check whether the battery cover, slide case, and batteries are included. Add the item price, shipping, and any applicable tax before comparing listings. “Untested” is a real uncertainty; price it as a possible repair or replacement, not a working unit.
Look at the seller’s actual photos and return terms. eBay says most eligible purchases may be covered when an item does not arrive or is faulty or different from the listing, subject to its policy. Read eBay’s current policy ↗
A simple pass rule
Consider it when the model is clear, the seller shows it powered on, the battery bay is clean, and the total price and return terms work for you.
Pass for now when the model is ambiguous, basic function is unproven, corrosion is visible, or the seller will not answer a specific question.
